Our Approach to Pain Management
When a patient comes to our clinic seeking help, we treat them the same way we would treat our parents, children, siblings or best friend. Dr. Marks, Dr. Rafii, Dr. Chew, and our entire team work hard to make you feel comfortable and truly understand your needs and goals. Unlike some practices, at the Diagnostic Pain Center, your concerns will never be dismissed and you will never be rushed out of our office. Our team understands how far genuine caring, kindness and encouragement can go in contributing to your good health, and we take the time to listen and really get to know all of our patients. By taking a diagnostic approach to your care, we strive to establish an optimal treatment plan based on your diagnosis – not just your symptoms. Our goal with patient care is to make you no longer need a pain doctor!
What to Expect at your Initial Appointment
At the Diagnostic Pain Center, we treat the whole person, carefully assessing your specific symptoms, lifestyle, genetic vulnerabilities and overall health. Our whole-person care starts with an in-depth, one-on-one consultation at which you and Dr. Marks, Dr. Rafii, or Dr. Chew will thoroughly discuss the history of your pain and perform an extensive physical examination.
At your initial appointment, your doctor will holistically evaluate how the pain is affecting your physical, emotional, professional and personal life. Learning is half the battle and the wisest investment of time, so we offer the latest in advanced diagnostic procedures to target and properly diagnose the source of your painful symptoms. Combining state-of-the-art technology with specialized expertise, our doctors will identify the real source of your problem.
In addition to a physical examination, your diagnostic assessment may include any of the following:
- X-Rays and Imaging Tests
- Diagnostic Nerve Blocks
- Selective Nerve Root Block
- Medial Branch Nerve Block
- Diagnostic Discography
Your doctor will also review your medications, prior treatments and any applicable radiology such as X-rays, Cat-Scans or MRIs. Our advanced diagnostic assessment program is designed to ensure a highly accurate diagnosis, as this is critical to deploying the best treatment approach, and avoiding wasted time. Our mission is to find the appropriate treatment for each patient as quickly as possible so that you can get back to enjoying your everyday activities faster.
Treatment at the Diagnostic Pain Center in Austin
Once the source of your pain has been correctly identified, your doctor will create a pain management framework that takes into account your lifestyle and other factors discussed during your consultation. We promise to take the extra time to explain the details of your test results, treatment options and potential outcomes. You are always the most critical part of the decision making process. Your opinions and active involvement are important to us, and treating your pain is a collaborative process with your comfort and happiness as the end goal.
In many cases, managing and eliminating your pain is as simple as starting an anti-inflammatory medication or adding certain key vitamins to your diet. Oftentimes, simple injections that directly target the affected area with a steroid medication can provide months of pain relief. Steroid injections allow patients to resume their normal daily activities, while making it easier to transition into a physical therapy program and a more active lifestyle. In other cases, oral medications may be a more appropriate treatment method for your condition. We also provide a variety of highly effective interventional and minimally invasive procedures.
A combination of these treatments, alongside other therapies and lifestyle changes is often the most useful approach to managing pain. Based on current literature and his extensive experience, your doctor will present and explain the most effective treatment options available for addressing your specific issues. You can feel confident that you will receive an honest opinion and straightforward recommendations. Conservative treatment is of course our first priority, but if your condition requires a more aggressive approach, we may refer you to another trusted specialist or surgeon.
